Five Tribesmen Aotearoa gang members sentenced for beating a member to death in a 2022 "hotbox" punishment.
Five members of the Tribesmen Aotearoa gang were sentenced in Hamilton High Court for the 2022 death of Mark Hohua, a gang member beaten to death in a “hotbox” — a violent internal discipline — after using the gang’s funds without permission.
Gang president Conway Rapana and Sergeant at Arms Te Patukino Biddle were convicted of murder, while vice-president Heremaia Gage and patched member Ngahere Tapara were found guilty of manslaughter; Dean Collier was acquitted.
The attack occurred at Rapana’s home in Waimana.
Hohua’s partner expressed grief, questioning why violence was used instead of dialogue.
Justice David Johnstone condemned the “hotbox” as unjustified and dangerous, stressing that the use of lethal force was foreseeable and irreversible, though the court acknowledged the act was not premeditated.
