The Elliot Lake Emergency Food Bank reports a 10% rise in clients during this year’s Thanksgiving weekend compared to 2024, with growing demand from retirees, larger families, and younger adults amid ongoing financial pressures.
While total households seeking aid have slightly declined from a peak of 380, increased family sizes are raising resource strain.
The food bank has boosted fundraising through debit tap 50/50 draws, earning over $1,000 in hours at one location, and continues to receive support from local stores, businesses, the city, and the John Carl MacIsaac Foundation.
A $228,212 grant from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation will fund facility upgrades and equipment, with government funds also supporting infrastructure improvements like a heat pump and backup generator.
The food bank remains open to food and cash donations.
