Azerbaijan starts towing Neptun rig to drill first underwater well in Umid field, marking a historic milestone.
On October 18, 2025, Azerbaijan began towing the Neptun jack-up rig to a drilling site in the Caspian Sea using vessels Mardakan, Zira, and Andoga.
The rig, previously moved from Turkmenistan in June, will drill Azerbaijan’s first underwater appraisal well in the Umid field, reaching a planned depth of 7,067 meters.
The operation marks a historic milestone and is expected to take about 10 months.
Meanwhile, Iran continues seismic surveys near its border with Azerbaijan, expands domestic exploration across 26 provinces, and explores international partnerships, including training programs in Afghanistan.
