WA ministers attended a donor-funded dinner at billionaire’s home, sparking ethics debate.
Eleven Western Australian ministers, including Premier Roger Cook and Deputy Premier Rita Saffioti, attended a November 2024 dinner at billionaire Kerry Stokes’ Perth mansion, as disclosed in the state’s ministerial gift register.
The event, described as a thank-you for taxpayer-funded donations to Stokes’ Telethon charity, drew scrutiny over transparency, with WA taxpayers contributing $51.5 million since 2020, including $13 million in the prior year.
All attendees received a Stokes family book.
The register also revealed several ministers, including Cook and Saffioti, held free Qantas Chairman’s Lounge memberships—though Cook faced criticism for not initially declaring his.
Other gifts included raffle prizes, concert and race tickets, a lithium-bearing mineral sample, a cement spatula, and multiple hams.
The disclosures have intensified debate over perks and donor relationships in state politics.
