U.S. robocalls hit a six-year high in 2025, with widespread scams using AI, despite weak caller ID adoption and inadequate protections.
Spam robocalls in the U.S. have hit a six-year high, with Americans receiving an average of 2.56 billion monthly by September 2025, up from 2.14 billion in 2024, according to U.S. PIRG and YouMail. Despite the 2019 TRACED Act requiring caller ID authentication, only 44% of FCC-registered companies had fully adopted the technology by September 2025, down from 47% the prior year. Scam texts have also surged, reaching nearly 19 billion in 2024, while victims lost an average of $3,690 from robocalls in the first half of 2025—a 16% increase. AI is enabling more sophisticated scams, including voice cloning and fake delivery alerts. All 50 state attorneys general joined a bipartisan effort in August to pressure voice providers, but consumer advocates say protections remain inadequate.
