UK fines 491 firms £10.2M for underpaying 42K workers from 2018–2023, citing unpaid training and shifts.
British Gas owner Centrica, EG Group, Holland & Barrett, and Go Outdoors are among 491 UK employers named by the Department for Business and Trade for underpaying staff the national minimum or living wage between 2018 and 2023, resulting in £10.2 million in fines.
EG Group owed £824,384 to 3,317 workers, averaging £250 each, while Holland & Barrett and Go Outdoors owed £153,079 and £240,106, respectively.
Around 42,000 workers have been repaid, with issues tied to unpaid training, uniforms, and shift prep.
Holland & Barrett said the problem, from 2015 to 2021, was resolved by 2022.
The government reiterated its commitment to fair pay, with Business Secretary Peter Kyle emphasizing enforcement.
Centrica, EG Group, and Go Outdoors have not commented.
