Susan Stamberg, the first woman to anchor a nightly national news program and a founding figure at NPR, has died at 87.
As a pioneering journalist, she brought warmth, authenticity, and intellectual depth to All Things Considered since joining in 1972 and was known for her distinctive voice, knitting on air, and human-centered storytelling.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, she was the first in her family to attend college, earning a degree from Barnard College.
Her career included reporting for WAMU and Voice of America during her husband’s diplomatic posting in India.
She broke barriers as a woman and Jewish journalist in a male-dominated field, earning honors including the National Radio Hall of Fame and a Hollywood Walk of Fame star.
She retired in September 2025 and is survived by her son, Josh, and granddaughters, Vivian and Lena.
