The Supreme Court has taken suo motu action over a surge in digital arrest scams targeting vulnerable individuals, particularly elderly citizens, using forged court documents and fake judicial orders to extort money.
The move follows a case in Haryana where a 73-year-old woman was tricked into transferring over ₹1 crore based on a fabricated Supreme Court order.
The court, led by Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi, condemned the forgery of judicial documents as a serious threat to public trust and the rule of law, directing the CBI, Union Home Ministry, and state agencies to respond and coordinate nationwide efforts.
