Slovakia's Smer party expelled from PES over pro-Russian stance and democratic backsliding.
The Party of European Socialists (PES) unanimously expelled Slovakia’s Smer party, led by Prime Minister Robert Fico, over serious breaches of democratic values.
The decision, made at a congress in Amsterdam on October 17, 2025, cited Fico’s pro-Russian stance, his attendance at Moscow’s WWII victory celebrations in May—making him the only EU leader to attend despite a bloc-wide boycott—and actions undermining the rule of law in Slovakia.
Fico’s government has also blocked new EU sanctions against Russia, challenging collective EU policy on Ukraine.
The PES emphasized that membership requires adherence to core democratic principles, calling the expulsion a clear message on accountability.
