Senator Jane Hume faced backlash for joking about regional Australia during a Sunrise interview, prompting criticism from Labor’s Kristy McBain.
Liberal Senator Jane Hume drew criticism for joking on October 17 that she’d need to “talk slower” and discuss regions more if she joined the Nationals, referencing “Cocky’s Corner.” The remarks, made during a Sunrise interview in response to a question about defecting, were condemned by Labor’s Regional Development Minister Kristy McBain, who called them “out of touch” and insulting to regional Australians.
McBain challenged Hume to visit her Eden-Monaro electorate and offered coffee at local cafes.
Hume defended the comments as humor aimed at her Nationals colleagues, saying she was open to judging regional food and coffee.
Her spokesperson said the remarks were not meant to mock regional residents.
Liberal leader Sussan Ley did not comment, and Hume was removed from the frontbench in May.
