Sculpture by the Sea 2025 opened along Sydney’s coast despite funding shortfalls and safety controversies.
Sculpture by the Sea launched its 2025 exhibition along Sydney’s Bondi to Tamarama coast despite a last-minute $200,000 funding gap, partially resolved by donations and a NRMA Insurance sponsorship.
The free outdoor art show, expected to draw 450,000 visitors, features over 100 sculptures, including four by Indian and Indian diaspora artists, notably Shovin Bhattacharjee’s glowing red steel piece Cosmic Eye in Tamarama Park.
The event faced scrutiny over a 2024 safety incident at its Kingswood storage site, where installer Yuri Humeniuk suffered facial injuries and filed an unfair dismissal claim, which the organization denies, citing his casual employment status.
Founding director David Handley said it was the first worker injury in 29 years.
Tensions also emerged with federal Arts Minister Tony Burke over lack of government funding.
Sculpture by the Sea 2025 se inauguró a lo largo de la costa de Sydney a pesar de la escasez de fondos y las controversias sobre la seguridad.
