Newcastle bought an industrial site for $38.7M to boost revenue and avoid rate hikes.
The City of Newcastle has acquired the 8.64-hectare Sandgate industrial site for $38.7 million, marking the first purchase under its Future Fund.
The site, previously council-owned for over 30 years, includes two leased warehouses generating $1.28 million annually and has two approved development applications.
The acquisition aims to diversify revenue to support infrastructure and services without raising rates.
It is the third asset added to the fund, following a Bunnings warehouse and a medical centre.
A master planning process will evaluate future uses, including potential relocation of the Works Depot.
The purchase was approved by the fund’s governance committee and council.
