New Zealand has secured $3.5 million in funding to extend the Bikes in Schools programme through June 2027, supporting primary and intermediate schools in building bike tracks, providing equipment, and teaching cycling safety.
The initiative, backed by the Bike On New Zealand Charitable Trust and the National Road Safety Promotion Programme, aims to boost children's physical activity, confidence, and road safety awareness.
Since 2010, over 400 schools have participated, benefiting thousands of students.
Transport Minister Chris Bishop highlighted the programme’s long-term benefits and visited Wilford School in Petone to open a new track, with future funding to be reviewed in the next National Land Transport Programme.
