The first G-Class tram has arrived at Melbourne’s new Maidstone Tram Depot, marking a key step in a $1.85 billion upgrade to the city’s tram network.
The low-floor, 25-meter trams, designed with input from passengers and accessibility groups, will replace older models on routes 57, 59, and 82, offering double the capacity and improved accessibility.
Testing is underway at the purpose-built depot, which will maintain the fleet and support 280 local jobs.
The trams, built by Alstom in Dandenong, feature enhanced safety, energy efficiency, and performance tailored to Melbourne’s track conditions, with the first entering service around mid-2026.
