Malwal Aweng was sentenced to 25 years for fatally stabbing Mayiik Ring, a peacemaker, during a dispute in Melbourne in 2022.
Malwal Aweng, 28, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the murder of Mayiik Ring, a 32-year-old man who died after being fatally stabbed during a dispute in Melbourne on December 30, 2022.
Ring, attempting to mediate an argument between Aweng and his girlfriend Nyaiek Anyang, was stabbed in the abdomen with a knife from her bag.
He died just after midnight on December 31.
Aweng, on bail at the time, fled but was later arrested.
He admitted to manslaughter but denied intent to kill.
After a hung jury in the first trial, a second jury found him guilty in April.
Justice Andrew Tinney called the attack “vicious” and “entirely uncalled for,” noting Ring was a blameless peacemaker.
Aweng also pleaded guilty to injuring Anyang, who learned after Ring’s death that she was pregnant with his child.
The judge cited Aweng’s prior criminal history and public safety in sentencing.
He will be eligible for parole in 19 years and has served over two years.
