Kurdish-led SDF agrees to integrate with Syria’s new government forces after Assad’s fall.
Syrian Kurdish forces, led by the U.S.-backed SDF, have reached a preliminary agreement with Syria’s new Sunni-led government to integrate their military and security forces into the national army, SDF commander Mazloum Abdi said on October 16, 2025.
The deal, following months of stalled talks after Bashar Assad’s ouster in December 2024, will see SDF units join the military as organized formations under Defense Ministry rules, with a joint committee to finalize the process.
The SDF’s combat experience against ISIS and plans to merge Kurdish-led police forces are expected to bolster national security.
The agreement aims to stabilize the country after over a decade of conflict, though challenges remain over decentralization and regional tensions.
