Italian man sentenced to 2 years for stealing $2.4M in SNAP benefits via EBT skimming.
Giovanni Spirea, a 29-year-old Italian man living in the U.S. illegally, was sentenced to two years in federal prison for his role in a multi-state SNAP fraud scheme that stole over $2.4 million in benefits.
From 2023 to 2024, he and co-conspirators used skimming devices to steal EBT card data, enabling the purchase of more than 120,000 pounds of food, including infant formula and energy drinks, across Oregon, Washington, and California.
The goods were stored in homes and storage units before being shipped to California and sold on the black market.
Spirea, one of 17 indicted, pleaded guilty in July 2025 to conspiracy to defraud the U.S., was ordered to pay nearly $62,000 in restitution, and will serve three years of supervised release.
Officials stressed the theft targeted vulnerable families and underscored efforts to combat SNAP fraud.
