India's Supreme Court forms a committee to create binding guidelines ensuring transgender rights in employment and healthcare, following a ruling that protected a trans woman teacher’s constitutional rights.
The Supreme Court of India has established a committee led by retired judge Justice Asha Menon to create policies ensuring equal employment opportunities, inclusive healthcare, and protections for transgender and gender-non-conforming individuals.
The move follows a landmark ruling awarding compensation to transwoman teacher Jane Kaushik, who was wrongfully denied jobs at two private schools in Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat despite receiving appointment letters.
The court ruled that terminating her employment based on her gender identity violated constitutional rights to equality and dignity, emphasizing that discrimination on this basis is unacceptable in public and private institutions.
The committee, including transgender activists and legal experts, will issue binding guidelines until the central government enacts a formal national policy.
