Since 2014, the number of national waterways has risen from five to 111, with 32 now operational, boosting cargo movement from 18 million to 145 million tonnes in 2024–25.
The government aims to reach 200 million tonnes by 2030 and 250 million by 2047, while expanding river tourism with 25 cruises and upgraded terminals featuring electric shore connections and 24-hour navigation aids in cities like Varanasi, Kolkata, and Patna.
