A hunter in North Idaho shot a grizzly bear in self-defense near the Canadian border but escaped unharmed.
A hunter in North Idaho was charged by a grizzly bear near the Canadian border on Wednesday, firing four shots in self-defense but escaping unharmed.
The incident occurred in the Selkirk Recovery Zone, a federally protected area for grizzly bears, where the U.S. population is estimated at at least 57.
Though the bear and blood were not found immediately, officials believe it may be injured and still in the area.
This follows a similar incident in May when a hunter mistakenly shot a grizzly in nearby Bonner County.
Authorities continue to monitor the region as part of ongoing bear conservation efforts.
