Gevo shifts its sustainable aviation fuel project to North Dakota due to South Dakota pipeline delays, cutting costs and leveraging a federal loan.
Gevo is moving its sustainable aviation fuel project from Lake Preston, South Dakota, to Richardton, North Dakota, due to delays in the Summit Carbon Solutions pipeline.
The shift, prompted by landowner opposition and permitting issues in South Dakota, allows Gevo to expand its existing ethanol plant—already equipped with carbon capture and storage—using a $1.46 billion federal loan.
The North Dakota facility will produce 30 million gallons of jet fuel annually at a cost of $500 million, half the original South Dakota target and significantly less than the $2.6 billion projected.
The company is working with the U.S. Department of Energy to transfer the loan and plans to sell carbon credits and explore enhanced oil recovery opportunities.
While the South Dakota site remains viable long-term, it is no longer a priority.
