France delays New Caledonia’s elections to June 2026 to resolve political disputes.
The French Senate has approved postponing New Caledonia’s provincial elections from late 2025 to no later than June 2026, citing the need to resolve political disputes under the Bougival agreement.
The move, backed by a large majority, aims to include the FLNKS, which rejected the agreement, in ongoing talks.
This follows two prior delays due to civil unrest sparked by electoral reforms feared to weaken indigenous voting power.
While pro-France leaders support the delay, the Union Calédonienne opposes it, warning of unrest if the process is rushed.
The bill now heads to the National Assembly, where debate is expected to be contentious amid a fragmented parliament.
