Former sheriff’s sergeant allegedly pointed a gun at unarmed teens while drunk, sparking a lawsuit and investigation.
A federal lawsuit has been filed against former Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Master Sergeant William “Billy” Squires and five unnamed individuals, alleging he pointed a loaded gun at unarmed teenage boys while reportedly intoxicated on September 28, 2025, in Hilton Head Island.
The lawsuit, brought by the mother of one teen, claims Squires used excessive force, falsely reported the incident, and enlisted neighbors to detain the teens.
Video of the confrontation, which occurred after Squires left duty, led to his termination.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating potential criminal charges.
The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office declined to comment due to pending litigation.
