Derry City Council broke equality rules by banning emblems without proper impact review, the Equality Commission found.
Derry City and Strabane District Council was found by the Equality Commission to have violated its own equality rules by banning the sale of certain emblems, including Parachute Regiment flags, without properly assessing the policy’s impact on equality and community relations.
The council, which argued the move was a clarification of existing rules, failed to conduct required evaluations or ensure staff and councillors were adequately trained on equality duties.
While no formal breach of the Equality Scheme was found, the Commission emphasized the need for better training and oversight.
The council acknowledged shortcomings and pledged to address them, committing to report progress within six months while reaffirming its dedication to equality and good relations.
