Cumbria gets £705,641 in UK government funds to fight rising homelessness, including support for housing and addiction treatment.
Cumbrian councils have received £705,641 from a £84 million government funding package to combat homelessness, announced on October 10 for World Homeless Day.
Cumberland Council got £695,141 and Westmorland & Furness Council £10,500 for the Rough Sleeping Prevention and Recovery Grant, to fund support workers, treatment, charities, and housing.
Rough sleeping rose in both areas from 2023 to 2024, with 104 in Cumberland and 198 in Westmorland & Furness, and 20 and 28 cases reported in early 2025.
Additional funds include £11 million for children in temporary housing, £3 million for addiction treatment, and £200,000 for night shelters.
The government also pledged to ban 'no fault' evictions via the upcoming Renters’ Rights Bill, following assessments of 13 and 42 households needing duty of care due to Section 21 notices in early 2025.
