Bangladeshi parties sign reform charter post-uprising, but boycotts and protests persist ahead of Feb 2025 elections.
Major Bangladeshi political parties signed the "July National Charter," a reform roadmap aimed at strengthening democracy, transparency, and electoral fairness after last year’s uprising that ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The charter, developed by a National Consensus Commission under interim leader Muhammad Yunus, was endorsed by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and eight allies, though Hasina’s Awami League and the student-led National Citizen Party boycotted it.
Protests erupted in Dhaka, with demonstrators demanding recognition, legal immunity, and reparations for victims of the 2024 uprising, leading to clashes where police used teargas and batons, injuring at least 10.
The interim government pledged national elections in February 2025, but concerns remain over inclusivity and implementation amid ongoing tensions.
