Wisconsin advances Gail’s Law to cover breast cancer screenings for high-risk women, eliminating out-of-pocket costs.
Wisconsin lawmakers advanced Gail’s Law, a bipartisan bill to eliminate out-of-pocket costs for supplemental breast cancer screenings for women with dense breast tissue or other high-risk factors.
The legislation, named after Gail Ziemer who died from undetected breast cancer, passed the state Senate 32-1 and moves to the Assembly.
It would require insurers to cover MRIs and ultrasounds, crucial for early detection in women where dense tissue hides tumors.
Supporters say the law could save lives and reduce long-term costs, noting similar laws in 30 other states had minimal impact on premiums.
Governor Tony Evers plans to sign it if enacted.
