UN warns Colombia’s illegal gold mining pollution in Atrato River basin poses severe health and human rights risks.
The UN has warned Colombia that mercury pollution from illegal gold mining in the Atrato River basin has created a severe human rights crisis, with over a third of the river’s watershed population exposed to unsafe mercury levels, risking neurological and developmental harm.
U.N. experts cited the Colombian government’s failure to enforce a 2016 court ruling granting the river legal rights, due to political instability, corruption, and lack of funding.
They linked the pollution to ongoing human rights abuses by armed groups, including forced labor and displacement, and urged immediate action to stop mining, clean up contamination, and protect affected Indigenous and Afro-descendant communities.
The government has not responded to the letter sent over 60 days ago.
