Star halfback Jesse Southwell leaves Newcastle Knights for Brisbane Broncos, citing desire to win, amid concerns over talent concentration in NRLW.
Star halfback Jesse Southwell has left the Newcastle Knights after rejecting a record seven-year contract to join NRLW champions Brisbane Broncos on a two-year deal.
The Knights, who called the offer unprecedented in women’s Australian sport, expressed disappointment, citing Southwell’s key role in their back-to-back premierships and her local roots.
Southwell said her move was driven by a desire to win, a decision seen as a quiet critique of the Knights’ recent performance despite consistent top-four finishes.
Knights’ director of football Chris James warned that concentrating elite talent in a few clubs risks undermining competition, expansion, and the path to full professionalism.
With the NRLW growing to 12 teams, concerns are mounting over long-term sustainability.
Southwell, who earned her first Jillaroos call-up and starred in State of Origin, informed teammates of her departure after the Knights’ preliminary final loss.
As of October 16, 2025, the club has not announced replacements but is actively pursuing new signings.
