A 19-year-old Brookings, South Dakota man, Bailey D. Melchor, was arrested and charged with felony abuse and aggravated battery after allegedly physically abusing his 3-month-old daughter, causing multiple rib and limb fractures and a possible brain hemorrhage.
Authorities say he repeatedly threw, struck, squeezed, and choked the infant, prompting a report that led to his arrest Tuesday afternoon.
The baby received treatment at Brookings Hospital before being transferred to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Melchor is being held at the Brookings County Detention Center as the investigation continues.
