Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) is under scrutiny for accepting at least $65,000 in donations from Pin Ni, a Chinese businessman linked to the Chinese Communist Party and leader of Wanxiang America, a U.S. subsidiary of China’s Wanxiang Group. Federal records show Ni gave $60,000 to a super PAC supporting Sherrill’s gubernatorial bid and $5,800 directly to her campaign, both at the legal maximum. Questions remain over Ni’s U.S. citizenship or residency status, which is required for political donations. The contributions have raised concerns about foreign influence in American politics, especially given Sherrill’s voting record on China-related legislation and her campaign’s lack of response to inquiries. The New Jersey gubernatorial race remains closely contested, with Sherrill and Republican Jack Ciattarelli each polling near 43 percent.
