A rare 1672 theology book found in a MSU donation bin is now preserved in the university’s Special Collections.
A rare 1672 Latin theology book, Theologia Moralis by Austrian Jesuit Paul Laymann, was found in a donation bin at Michigan State University’s Surplus Store in late August.
The pigskin-bound, hand-pressed text, likely from a private collection and never part of the university’s library, is believed to be one of the few surviving copies in excellent condition.
Staff identified it as one of the oldest books they’ve handled.
Rather than selling it, MSU preserved the book in its Special Collections.
The Surplus Store has previously recovered other rare items, including first editions of Darwin’s works and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
