Queensland Ballet’s new director launches a bold 2026 season with premieres and global ambitions despite past losses.
Ivan Gil-Ortega, Queensland Ballet’s new artistic director, has launched an ambitious 2026 season featuring multiple Australian and world premieres, including a reimagined Nutcracker by Derek Deane and a Hamlet adaptation by Leo Mujic.
Despite a $9.456 million loss and staff cuts in 2024, Gil-Ortega, who took over in February 2025, is focusing on long-term growth, international collaborations, and expanding repertoire to boost the company’s global profile ahead of the 2032 Olympics.
