A police misconduct hearing over an officer's 2015 shooting of an unarmed man was dropped after a panel found no case to answer.
A misconduct hearing for Metropolitan Police officer W80, who shot Jermaine Baker during a 2015 failed prison break, has been discontinued after a panel found no case to answer.
The officer, a counter-terrorism specialist, shot Baker, an unarmed man in a stolen car, believing he was reaching for a weapon; an imitation firearm was later found in the vehicle.
The decision follows years of legal challenges, including a 2017 prosecution decision not to charge criminally, a 2023 Supreme Court ruling allowing misconduct proceedings, and a 2022 public inquiry concluding the shooting was lawful.
The panel cited the case’s complexity, involving over 3,000 pages of documents, and emphasized timely closure for both the officer and Baker’s family.
Full reasons for the dismissal will be released within five working days.
