A New Zealand mother says the Inland Revenue (IRD) began deducting $1,000 weekly from her account to settle a child support debt she claims is invalid, citing no prior notice and financial hardship.
The debt, dating to a custody dispute about a decade ago, grew to $23,000 before penalties were waived, leaving $16,000.
She says she informed IRD she was no longer the liable parent but was not believed.
IRD reports increased enforcement since mid-June, with over 16,500 notices sent and $22.5 million collected from deductions, amid an estimated $10 billion in tax debt.
Some individuals report receiving no warning, raising concerns about transparency and fairness in child support enforcement.
