Missouri installs first Safe Haven Baby Box in Cape Girardeau County, with more coming to North County, offering anonymous, 24/7 newborn surrender.
Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, has installed its first Safe Haven Baby Box at the Fruitland Fire Station, funded by a $12,000 donation, offering a 24/7 anonymous surrender option for newborns up to 90 days old.
The Florissant Valley Fire Protection District is also launching North County’s first baby box at Fire House 1 by year-end, funded by community donations, following similar initiatives in Mehlville and O’Fallon.
Both efforts aim to prevent unsafe surrenders and provide immediate care, with three babies already safely surrendered through existing boxes since 2023.
Officials stress the boxes offer a judgment-free, lifesaving alternative for parents in crisis, supported by services from Lutheran Family and Children’s Services.
