A $200 million upgrade to NZ’s State Highway 1 near Rolleston began, aiming to boost safety, efficiency, and regional growth.
A $200 million upgrade to State Highway 1 near Rolleston, 20km south of Christchurch, has begun as part of New Zealand’s Roads of Regional Significance programme.
The project, aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and economic growth in the fast-growing Selwyn District, includes road realignment, a new roundabout, pedestrian and cycle subway, rail crossing upgrades, and future flyover construction.
Stage one, led by Fulton Hogan, is set for completion by late 2026, with Stage two starting in October 2026.
Temporary traffic changes, including a 30km/h speed limit and tree removal after relocating southern grass skinks, are underway.
The initiative is part of a $7 billion government infrastructure investment to support regional development.
