Matthew Lane, 20, of Massachusetts, was sentenced to four years in prison for hacking into PowerSchool’s system in December 2024, stealing sensitive data from over 2.7 million Canadian students and millions in the U.S., and demanding $2.85 million in bitcoin.
He pleaded guilty to cyber extortion, identity theft, and unauthorized access.
PowerSchool paid a ransom to have the data deleted, but some school boards later received additional demands.
Lane must pay $14 million in restitution and a $25,000 fine.
The breach affected school districts across multiple Canadian provinces and U.S. states.
Canada’s privacy watchdog ended its investigation in July, citing PowerSchool’s cooperation and security improvements, including a promised independent assessment by March 2026.
