John Dempster, a Cumbrian mountain rescue pioneer who led for decades and earned an MBE, died at 83 after 60 years of service.
John Dempster MBE, a pioneering figure in Cumbrian mountain rescue, has died at 83 after over 60 years of service with the Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team, where he began as a 15-year-old runner in the 1950s.
He served as team chair for 36 years, helped build the team’s headquarters in 2003, and chaired the Lake District Search and Mountain Rescue Association for 15 years, supporting all 12 regional teams.
His leadership improved rescuer safety, efficiency, and volunteer insurance.
Awarded an MBE in 2005, he remained active until days before his death on October 9.
