Irish presidential candidate Catherine Connolly criticizes EU militarization, defends her campaign team, and highlights volunteer support and transparency.
Irish presidential candidate Catherine Connolly voiced concern over the EU’s growing militarisation, likening it to pre-World War II Germany, and stressed her worry as a woman and mother about defence spending cutting into welfare.
During an RTE interview, she defended hiring a woman with a firearms conviction and past ties to the political group Eirigi, saying party membership isn’t a hiring concern.
She addressed scrutiny over her 2018 Syria trip to the Yarmouk refugee camp with pro-Assad militia guides, stating her goal was to understand the refugee crisis.
Connolly said 14,000 volunteers, mostly first-timers, have joined her campaign and denied close ties with former MEPs Clare Daly and Mick Wallace, also on the trip.
She affirmed her consistent political record, support for transparency via Freedom of Information access, and plans to bring her two black cats and her husband’s beehives to the presidential residence.
