India bans "ORS" on drink labels to prevent consumer deception about therapeutic benefits.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has banned the use of the term "ORS" on food product labels, brand names, and trademarks, including in fruit-based, non-carbonated, and ready-to-drink beverages.
The directive, effective immediately, applies to all such products regardless of formulation or disclaimers.
FSSAI stated that using "ORS" misleads consumers into believing the product is a therapeutic oral rehydration solution, violating the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Previously allowed with warnings, such labeling is now deemed misbranding under Sections 52 and 53, subjecting violators to penalties.
Authorities are tasked with enforcing compliance and taking action against non-compliant products.
