A former Melbourne temple monk faces 19 child sex charges; survivors allege abuse from 1994 to 2002.
A mother broke down in Victoria’s County Court as she testified about her daughter’s allegations of sexual abuse by Venerable Naotunne Vijitha, the 70-year-old former head monk of Melbourne’s Dhamma Sarana temple, who faces 19 child sexual offence charges from 1994 to 2002.
The girl, now an adult, said she was abused from age nine and only disclosed the abuse in 2022, fearing disbelief.
She described being touched and kissed by Vijitha, who denies all charges.
Six adult survivors allege abuse occurred at the temple’s Keysborough and former Springvale locations, including in living quarters, a prayer room, and Sunday school.
Other family members testified, including a mother who said her daughter cut up a dress after being abused twice at age eight or nine and discarded a key tag given by Vijitha.
The trial continues before Judge Pardeep Tiwana.
