A Sumter County, South Carolina, investigation is underway after a special needs student at Lakewood High School was allegedly assaulted by a former staff member on September 10, 2025.
The incident, captured on video, reportedly involved the employee pushing the student into a trash can and manipulating his neck.
The staff member, a paraprofessional, was placed on administrative leave the next day and resigned four days later.
The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office confirmed it received the report on October 14 and is conducting a thorough investigation, calling the incident “disturbing.” No arrests have been made, and the school district is cooperating, though it cannot release the video due to state law.
The district is also being asked to provide the employee’s work history and qualifications.
