A Cork water plant shut down for 12+ hours in Aug 2024 after contractors spilled bitumen, but water was later deemed safe.
A water treatment plant in Inniscarra, County Cork, serving nearly 144,000 people, was shut down for over 12 hours in late August 2024 after contractors spilled less than 20 liters of bitumen into raw water sumps during roof repairs, the EPA confirmed.
The spill went unreported, and was only discovered by another team who noticed a slick in the water.
The plant closed at 8:15 p.m. on August 28 and resumed operations the next morning after sumps were emptied and water quality tested.
EPA testing over five days found no contamination, and drinking water was confirmed safe.
Customers in Ballincollig, Dripsey, and Coachford experienced low pressure or outages, initially attributed to technical issues.
The EPA recommended improved contractor reporting protocols and required Uisce Éireann to submit a corrective action plan.
The Lee Road plant, serving most of Cork City, was unaffected.
