A Chinese naval officer’s diary confirms his role in the 1944 D-Day invasion and Allied campaigns in France, revealing overlooked Chinese contributions to WWII’s European theater.
A previously unknown diary from Chinese naval officer Lam Ping-yu, discovered in a demolished Hong Kong tenement, reveals his participation in the 1944 D-Day invasion and the Allied campaign in France.
Serving aboard the British battleship HMS Ramillies, Lam documented the Normandy landings, including the massive fleet movement and the ship’s evasion of three torpedoes.
His account, confirmed by British naval records, shows at least 14 Chinese officers took part in Operation Neptune across seven vessels.
Lam also took part in the August 1944 invasion of southern France.
The diary, now on display in France, highlights the overlooked role of Chinese personnel in the European theater and preserves a rare non-Western perspective on a pivotal moment in World War II.
