Chiltern Railways is introducing 13 new Mark 5A trains in early 2026 to replace nearly 50-year-old carriages on routes from London to Oxford, Aylesbury, and the West Midlands.
The modern fleet will add 10,000 weekday seats and offer improved Wi-Fi, air conditioning, digital screens, charging ports, better luggage and bike storage, and enhanced accessibility.
The rollout supports Chiltern’s 2030 Vision to transition to battery-electric trains by the early 2030s, aided by partial network electrification.
Rail Minister Lord Peter Hendy called the investment a key step in modernizing the rail system for cleaner, more efficient travel.
The phased launch begins in 2026, with additional services expected from December.
