A Chicago man accused of hiring someone to kill Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino was indicted on federal charges.
Juan Espinoza Martinez, a 37-year-old Chicago man living in the U.S. illegally, has been indicted on federal charges of soliciting murder-for-hire in connection with an alleged plot to kill U.S. Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino.
The indictment, filed October 15, 2025, does not mention gang ties, despite earlier allegations linking Martinez to the Latin Kings.
Authorities say he allegedly offered a $10,000 bounty for Bovino’s death, referencing the chief in messages and sharing his photo.
Martinez, arrested at a construction site, is not a U.S. citizen and faces up to 10 years in prison.
Prosecutors argue he poses a flight risk and danger, while his lawyers deny any criminal history or gang affiliation, calling him a union worker and youth sports coach.
An arraignment is set for Friday.
