70 captive-bred, endangered Regent Honeyeaters released in NSW to boost wild population.
On Thursday, 70 critically endangered Regent Honeyeaters, bred in captivity and fitted with radio trackers, were released into Wonnarua Country near Kurri, marking the fourth release in the region and the 30th anniversary of the conservation breeding program.
With only about 300 left in the wild, the Hunter Valley remains a key breeding area.
The release, led by the NSW Government’s Saving our Species Program and partners including Taronga Conservation Society and BirdLife Australia, aims to boost wild populations.
Residents are encouraged to report sightings via BirdLife Australia’s online portal to help track the birds’ movements and support long-term conservation.
