Bihar enforces identity checks for women in burqas using female officers to prevent fraud and boost turnout.
The Election Commission is enforcing a 1994 rule requiring identity verification for women voters in burqas during Bihar’s upcoming assembly elections, using female polling officers and simple privacy-preserving tools to maintain dignity and prevent fraud.
The policy, aimed at boosting female turnout in conservative areas, will be implemented across 90,712 polling stations with support from anganwadi workers.
The EC insists the process complies with electoral law and respects cultural norms, rejecting claims of discrimination.
Counting is set for November 14.
