Bangladesh seeks death penalty for ex-PM Sheikh Hasina over alleged crimes in 2023 protest crackdown.
Bangladeshi prosecutors have demanded the death penalty for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India in 2024 and remains in exile, over alleged crimes against humanity linked to a violent crackdown on student-led protests that resulted in up to 1,400 deaths.
The prosecution claims Hasina orchestrated or failed to prevent the violence, citing audio recordings and testimony from victims, while her former interior minister is also sought for execution.
Hasina, who denies the charges and calls the trial politically motivated, has not appeared in court.
The case is part of a broader legal push by Bangladesh’s interim government, which aims to hold elections in February.
